Garden Tours

Garden Tours:

Our featured attraction will be nearby Historic London Town & Public Gardens but we will also be touring three exquisite private gardens. Below are brief descriptions of the gardens. We did make arrangements for a commercial bus to shuttle people around to the gardens

Monday Tour

McWhorter Garden
The lovely suburban garden of Rosa & Bob McWhorter will be our first stop. It is a mature landscape under a tall canopy of trees with many winding paths that showcase their large deciduous and evergreen azaleas, as well as their choice rhododendron collection. They have many rare Dexter and Cowles hybrids that came from the Sandwich Club distributions on Cape Cod and also exciting new plants Bob raised from the Seed Exchange. They also have numerous companion plants that enrich the landscape.

London Town & Gardens
Our second stop and lunch will be at Historic London Town & Gardens. The site is a 23-acre park and museum that overlooks the South River, an inlet off of the Chesapeake Bay. The Potomac Valley Chapter has established memorial gardens there for two of our dear members, Gray Carter and Jean Beaudry. We look forward to showing you these special sites. In addition to the rhododendron and azalea collections, there are many camellias, magnolias, and hollies, as well as a mile-long walking trail among ornamentals and native plants.

London Town Gardens has also become an ASA Legacy site for the Marshy Point Azaleas, a hybrid group developed by the late Harry Weiskittel of Baltimore, MD. These plants and many other choice hybrids will be featured in our plant sale.

Tony Dove, our banquet keynote speaker Monday night, will discuss the history and development of the gardens at London Town since he designed the original landscape. You will enjoy his story about how he transformed an overgrown jungle of briars, weeds, and scrub trees into a spectacular garden featuring azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias, and other ornamentals. Tony will also share the history of his nearby private garden.

Tuesday Tour

Segree Garden
Our first stop on Tuesday will be Carol Segree’s garden, a diverse and artistic landscape that includes both sunny and shady areas. She has used the undulating topography to inspire the scenic paths among her rhododendrons and azaleas. Carol has also paid close attention to many subtle details including rare companion plants and whimsical garden art. In recent years, she has added significant stonework including retaining walls and a second patio with a fountain. She is now refining her collection keeping only the best cultivars while adding new introductions and more choice plants including camellias, evergreens, Japanese maples, flowering trees, wildflowers, and perennials.

Bradshaw Garden
When we leave Carol's garden, we will head to a spectacular private garden just a few minutes away called Hidden View Farm, the secluded estate of Richard Bradshaw. As the winding driveway works its way to the top of the hill, take note of the floral display on the steep banks which includes thousands of daffodils, hellebores, and other flowers. His 100-acre wooded site has a 10-acre fenced garden that includes a large pond with various water features including a fountain and waterfall. He has a massive camellia collection, azaleas, rhododendrons, hollies, ornamental trees, shrubs and companion plants. Richard's property has a large barn he has converted into a pavilion he can use for corporate events and weddings. We will have our lunch at his place and then can explore the garden before heading back to the hotel.
